Burnie Smith - Fibre Art @ Kristine's Coffee Shop

From Burnie ~
I would like to Thank -Juanita @ Kristine's for this opportunity to showcase my latest artworks.

I did a fabulous 2 year travelling trip around Australia, and discovered the Aboriginal design material on this trip.
Now I have incorporated some of these materials in my latest artworks.
I guess I was very impressed when looking at the landscape in the Northern Territory and could understand how the Aborigines interpreted their painting with dots.
Also in Alice Springs they were teaching people to do dot paintings.
This showcase is a break away from the work I was doing before leaving for this trip.
Enjoy my Artworks & Thankyou for you Support.

All Artworks are for Sale, unless otherwise stated. Regards, Burnie Smith

Sharon Gallagher Photography @ Kristine's Coffee Shop

I was born, raised and still reside here in Biloela. My interest in photography began way back in high school when it was one of the electives I studied in Art. I never even owned a "proper" camera until late 2005, but from then on photography has become a passion for me.
I have a strong appreciation for B&W photography, with portraiture being my preferred field. I love images that powerful, thought provoking and somewhat unconventional. Mostly self-taught, I'll read whatever I can get my hands on if I think I can learn something from it. The "Digital Era" has helped me tremendously. Being able to see your mistakes immediately really accelerates the learning process. Having spent my entire life as a dancer/choreographer has had a huge impact on the way I "create" my images. I plan each shot and know in my mind exactly how I want the finished product to look before I even release the shutter. I still have much to learn.....but am enjoying the journey every step of the way. Thanks to Juanita @ Kristisne's & Kym@ BAVA for allowing me the opportunity to showcase some of my work at Kristine's. Please enjoy......Cheers......SHARON GALLAGHER shazzlg@bigpond.net.au

"A Mental Picture" is the title of a collection of works by photographer Carly Burnham.
I met Carly at the Blueprint for the Bush, Rural Women's Forum, held in Roma recently.

The theme of the forum was " Liveability - A woman's perspective", and from Carly's perspective, she wants to make the bush a more liveable place for people with mental illness.
Carly lives in Monto on a cattle property. She has lived closely with schizophrenia and is inspired by the resilience of so many people affected by mental illness.

Through her photography, Carly wants to de-stigmatize and re-brand mental illness.
I found her photos profoundly touching. Every photo has a story.

The black and white medium is extremely evocative. Twenty shades of grey, from white to pure black, make you really think about the subject matter, the mood and the story. The composition of the portraits is superb, and the energy and the hope of the children seem to imply freedom even in a dark world.

Carly's subjects are affected by a range of mental disorders: schizophrenia, 1 in 100 suffer from delusions, hallucinations and paranoia associated with this condition. But Carly says with medication, people can lead a normal life following episodes.

Other disorders include bipolar, general anxiety disorder, post-natal depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and depression. Carly says with support, understanding and treatment, mental illness can be managed.

September Artist @ Kristine's

Congratulations Gail ~

I grew up in a family that was always doing something on the creative side from cooking to sewing and any craft. My first creations were done in Cake Decorating then moved into Patchwork from the sewing of children’s clothes. After doing a silk painting workshop (something I had always wanted to do) I found that this complimented my patchwork as I could colour my fabrics with my paints allowing me to create many colourful creations in fabric.

When folk art was the rage I attended lessons and enjoyed creating some lovely pieces for friends and family. When a friend who did lead lighting was in town I took some lessons from her and really enjoyed working with glass which also led to mosaics as you have left overs (a little like patchwork).

With all this happening I felt I needed a little more help with the drawing side of creating a picture (I could do very good stick men) so attended the Roy Oorloff workshop as a start. Since then BAVA has been formed and I have enjoyed the lessons and workshops from talented local artists as well as doing workshops with tutors from afar. I've a long way to go but I really enjoy the atmosphere of being with creative people (hoping some will rub off). There are many mediums in the world of art and I enjoy a few different ones and they all give me satisfaction when the job is finished.

June Artist @ Kristine's :)

Hi Everyone,

June Artist ~ Kym Simms :)
Well, after 7 months I have the pleasure of showcasing 7 pieces of artwork.
Some favourites of mine from my first workshop with Sarah Larsen in 2004.
I had a wonderful time and enjoyed it immensely.

I encourage this for all the artists I know, to enjoy a workshop and experience something new with exhibiting/showcasing their own works of art.

Having Fun with ART:) ~ has been my motto over the past 2 years.
To enjoy it, to create it, to produce a piece of work that makes you feel something and excites you to do more.
Thankyou to everyone along the way who I have met. I have enjoyed your company while we have been creating.

When Juanita (Proprietor of Kristine's) said in September 2007 that she would like to buy some new artwork for the shop, a light came on in my head (yes - things happen alot in my head) Wouldn't it be wonderful to showcase a BAVA artist each month with their artworks. Seven months later it has been received by Juanita & the community very well. I am very pleased also to know that it is booked up to February 2009 with local artists. Well Done everyone. Thanks Juanita for supporting to artists from BAVA and I encourage all our friends to enjoy the local Art while having a cuppa at Kristine's.

February Artist @ Kristine's Coffee Shop

Odette Williams
I was born in Africa, DR of the Congo. I started to draw all the interesting places in my home town and the brousse (bush). But I had to leave everything behind.

I haven't done any drawing or painting until I came here in Biloela where I met a lovely lady "Dorte" who ask me to join the BAVA group. Thanks to her, I started painting late 2006 and really enjoy it. I am not very good yet but I can see improvement already.

I really love acrylics painting. I would love to improve my watercolour and pastel, but one thing at the time.

I prefer painting African view as I miss my country a lot, and the colour can be so vibrant. I also love the ocean, water...
I really hope you will like my paintings at Kristine's in February and I Thank You, Juanita for your support with the local artworks.

Congratulations Odette, you have sold some of your paintings.
You will be so thrilled.
Kym :)

January Artists @ Kristine's Coffee Shop

Shirley Matheson & Granddaughter, Shanna Muston.

Shirley has been painting for a number of years, and her first forays into painting began with the help and encouragement of Sarah Larsen and then as member of a group of like-minded artists who gathered regularly to socialise and discover art. Shirley likes to explore different mediums and styles. These ventures into art have been fostered and supported through the Flying Arts School, various workshops and local artists. Shirley’s love of art has been inspirational to three of her grandchildren, Shanna being one of them. Many of Shirley’s pieces are proudly displayed in the homes of family members.

As well as painting on canvas, Shanna also enjoys experimenting with visual applications using computers. Throughout her high school years, Shanna has developed her artistic flair with support and encouragement from committed teachers. Shanna has applied to study at The Queensland College of Art in Brisbane and looks forward to encountering a variety of new perspectives.

Both Shirley and Shanna thank Juanita for her continued support of local artists.

The 2008 calendar is fully booked with local artists keen to showcase their artwork to community while they have a cuppa.
